Discovery
We recognise concerns about large private profits arising from research that was funded publicly or philanthropically (Nightingale and Mahdi, 2006; Mazzucato, 2018).
Petherton Bio does not commercialise research that its staff undertook under non-commercial auspices.
We also recognise that the history of science and innovation reveals the many ways in which discoveries are made: the principles of thermodynamics which underpin our work were discovered by distillers, brewers, and the makers of cannons.
Our actions
We use our profits to help drive discovery. We do so in two ways:
1. We provide financial and technical support for research in under-funded areas. We approach directly those whose work we esteem, and welcome recommendations.
2. We support the education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students. We currently do so through internships and bursaries.
We are working at pace with a world-leading University to introduce and support a new postgraduate qualification in Biotechnology for the 2025 academic year.
